CELAYA

Only 40 minutes by road from both San Miguel de Allende and Irapuato is Celaya - "Golden Gate to the Bajío". An important business center, Celaya is also the birthplace of one of the most important practitioners of neoclassical architecture, Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras (1759-1833). Visitors can see an exquisite example of his work in the Templo del Carmen. Celaya is also home to several buildings of historical importance such as the convent of Saint Francis (1683), for which Tresguerras built the altars, and the Augustinian cloister, also constructed in the seventeenth century
